Former Grey’s Anatomy star Patrick Dempsey is in final talks to join BRIDGET JONES’ BABY, the third film in the franchise that stars Renee Zellweger as the accident-prone Brit. Bridget Jones’ Diary began the franchise in 2001, with the sequel Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason, out in 2004.
Franchise star Hugh Grant has elected not to return, but Colin Firth will be reprising his role as Jones’ love interest Mark Darcy. Dempsey’s role is kept under wraps, though he’ll likely fill Grant’s shoes as a new love interest. Plot details are also kept hush, though judging by the title, audiences can reasonably expect hjinks ensuing around Jones’ baby, and perhaps the baby daddy?
Sharon Maguire, who directed the 2001 original, is back to helm the third installment. The story’s based on columns penned by Bridget Jones creator Helen Fielding, rather than the author’s latest Jones novel Mad About The Boy. Fielding scripted the initial drafts, along with David Nicholls.
Working Title is producing the new entry, with Tim Bevan, Eric Fellner, and Debra Heyward leading for the shingle. Universal is financing and distributing, with production anticipated to begin in only a few weeks.
The pic marks the first feature appearance for Dempsey since his turn in 2011’s Transformers: Dark Of The Moon. He’s repped by UTA and The Burstein Co.
