Golden Globe-nominated actor Paul Dano is shifting his focus to TV with the upcoming limited series ESCAPE AT DANNEMORA. The Showtime project will be executive produced and directed by Ben Stiller and is based on the 2015 prison escape in upstate New York.
Dano will join Benicio Del Toro and Patricia Arquette in the real-life story of Richard Matt and David Sweat, two inmates who were discovered missing at the maximum security Clinton Correction Facility in New York after being aided in their escape by a female prison employee. The escapes spawned a massive manhunt for the two convicted murderers.
Del Toro will play the artistic, yet intimidating Richard Matt, the mastermind behind the escape while Dano will fill in the role of David Sweat, a convicted cop killer who seduces Arquette’s Tilly Mitchell, the supervisor of the prison tailor shop who not only gets involved in sexual relationships with the two, but reluctantly gets involved in the escape plan.
The eight-episode series will be written and executive produced by Brett Johnson (Mad Men) and Michael Tolkin (The Player). The two aren’t strangers to Showtime, having worked together as writers on Ray Donovan. The duo will serve as executive producers alongside Bryan Zuriff (Steve Jobs), Michael De Luca (Fifty Shades of Grey) under Michael De Luca Productions. Nicky Weinstock will also serve as EP for Stiller’s Red Hour Productions. Production is slated to begin later this year on location in upstate New York.
Dano can be seen in Bong Joon Ho’s Okja, which recently debuted at Cannes. He also makes his directorial debut with Wildlife starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Carey Mulligan.
