Paul Scheer is the latest actor to join David Wain’s A FUTILE & STUPID GESTURE, the upcoming Netflix original movie about National Lampoon co-founder Doug Kenney.
Scheer has been tapped to play Paul Shaffer, who was best known as the bandleader of The Late Show with David Letterman. Scheer joins an all-star cast playing iconic figures in comedy history including which includes Will Forte as Kenney, Domhnall Gleeson as fellow National Lampoon co-founder Henry Beard, Joel McHale as Chevy Chase, Seth Green as Christopher Guest, Thomas Lennon as Michael O’Donoghue, Rick Glassman as Harold Ramis, Jon Daly as Bill Murray, and Jackie Tohn as Gilda Radner. Matt Walsh and Martin Mull will also star in the movie.
In addition to tracing the history of Harvard’s National Lampoon which gave us classic films like Caddyshack and Animal House, it will follow Kenney’s tragic story of substance abuse.
Michael Colton and John Aboud adapted the script from Josh Karp‘s book. The writing duo will also executive produce alongside Ted Hamm, Benjamin Ormand, Sean McKittrick and The Office’s Ed Helms through his Pacific Electric Co. Peter Principato and Jonathan Stern are also on board to produce.
Scheer is best known for his role in the FX comedy The League. He also has a recurring role on ABC’s Fresh Off The Boat and is an executive producer and director of the Fox sketch comedy show Party Over Here. His voice can be heard in the upcoming animated feature Nerdland with Paul Rudd and Patton Oswalt. He also has a role in James Franco’s The Disaster Artist.
