Penelope Cruz And Javier Bardem In Talks To Join Asghar Farhadi Drama

Academy Award winners and are in talks to star in Iranian director ’s forthcoming UNTITLED SPANISH-LANGUAGE DRAMA. Pedro Almodovar is producing through his El Deseo shingle with Alexandre Mallet-Guy and his Memento Films.

Project details are being kept under wraps, but the story revolves around a family of winemakers living in rural Spain, which according to Mallet-Guy is, “a psychological thriller with a dash of Agatha Christie in it.”

Farhadi’s previous films include the Best Foreign Language Oscar winner A Separation and The Salesman – which just took home Best Actor and Best Screenplay at Cannes. Cruz, who has a long-standing working relationship with producer Almodovar, reportedly expressed interest in working with Farhadi, which led to the project in the first place. While Farhadi doesn’t speak Spanish, his acclaimed 2013 film The Past was shot in French – another language he doesn’t speak.

 Cruz recently wrapped on The Queen of Spain, her third collaboration with director Fernando Trueba. Bardem, meanwhile, recently wrapped on the latest Pirates of the Caribbean installment, set to hit theaters in 2017. They real-life couple is set to star in Fernando Leon De Aranoa’s Escobar, where Cruz will star opposite Bardem, who is set to play the notorious drug kingpin.
