The cast for Kenneth Branagh’s remake of MURDER ON THE ORIENT EXPRESS continues to add A-list names to its manifest. The latest to board the pic is Oscar-winning actress Penelope Cruz who will join the massive cast that includes Johnny Depp, Michelle Pfeiffer, Daisy Ridley, Michael Pena, Judi Dench, Leslie Odom Jr., and Josh Gad.
Based on the beloved 1934 Agatha Christie novel, the story centers on a murder onboard the famous train, and introduces Belgian detective Hercule Poirot who must solve the case while being surrounded by duplicitous passengers. Depp will play Ratchett the man who is murdered while Pfeiffer will play the glamorous, yet secretive Mrs. Hubbard and Ridley will play a working class woman Mary Debenham. Dench is set to play Princess Dragomiroff of Russia while Pena will portray a Cuban passenger named Marquez. Odom Jr. will step into the role of playing Doctor Arbuthnot. Cruz’s role has yet to be revealed.
Branagh will direct the script from Michael Green. Branagh will also produce alongside Ridley Scott, Simon Kinberg, Mark Gordon, Michael Schaefer, Aditya Sood and Judy Hofflund. Steve Asbell will oversee for Fox. James Prichard, the author’s great grandson and chairman of Agatha Christie Ltd., and Hilary Strong, CEO at Agatha Christie Ltd., will executive produce.
Cruz’s most recent credits include The Brothers Grimsby, Zoolander 2, and Ma ma. She stars opposite her husband Javier Bardem in Escobar which examines the love affair between the drug lord Pablo Escobar and Colombian journalist Virginia Vallejo.
