Fresh off a starring turn in Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, Australian actor Brenton Thwaites has been cast as Dick Grayson in TITANS, the live-action series that will debut next year on Warner Bros.’ new DC-branded digital service, it was announced Thursday.
Titans follows a group of young superheroes-in-training who are recruited from every corner of the DC Comics universe, including Starfire (Anna Diop) and Raven (Teagan Croft), though Dick Grayson — better known as Batman’s sidekick Robin — will lead the team.
The series hails from Warner Bros. TV and executive producers Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, Akiva Goldsman and DC Entertainment’s Geoff Johns. Goldsman and Berlanti wrote the script with Johns, and the premise finds Grayson eager to emerge from the long shadow of his father figure Bruce Wayne, and strike out as his own man.
Thwaites has starred in a bunch of movies I didn’t see such as The Giver, Gods of Egypt, Maleficent and the latest Pirates installment, or just plain didn’t like, such as Oculus and The Signal. That said, the one film that he did manage to actually impress me with was Julius Avery’s little-seen indie Son of a Gun, which paired him with Ewan McGregor and Alicia Vikander. While Thwaites has appeared in several Australian series, including Home and Away, he has never done American TV before Titans.
