Those two words may not be what you immediately associated with Wonder Woman, but it’s true of the real-life story of the man behind the character, William Moulton Marston, and at the center of the first trailer for PROFESSOR MARSTON & THE WONDER WOMEN.
The film stars Luke Evans as Marston and Rebecca Hall as his wife Elizabeth Holloway Marston and Bella Heathcote as Olive Byrne, Marston’s student who would go on to become the domestic partner of both Marson and Elizabeth. Both women have also been credited as being inspirations for Marston’s creation of Wonder Woman for DC Comics as well.
Based on the trailer, the story seems to primarily focus on the three central characters’ relationships with one another, which was quite unconventional, especially for the time, and seemed to bleed into the storylines in Marston’s comics. However, what this movie hopefully doesn’t do is muse about Marston as the white man who created one of the most iconic female superheroes and instead puts Elizabeth and Olive at the front and center of the film. It’s both the more interesting of the two possibilities (Olive would continue to live with Elizabeth after Marston’s death and they helped raise each other’s children with Marston) as well as more timely.
The film is written and directed by Angela Robinson and set for release on October 27.
