The project has been in development for years but with Malek cast as the frontman of the legendary British rock band Queen and Singer in the director’s chair, the pic is on the fast track at 20th Century Fox and New Regency.
Previous iterations of the film have been on the shelf including one at Sony starring Sacha Baron Cohen as Mercury with a script written by Peter Morgan. Ben Winshaw was also slated to star in a version with Dexter Fletcher, but the project fell apart after creative differences.
Singer will direct the most recent script written Anthony McCarten. George King of GK Films will produce alongside Jim Beach. Denis O’Sullivan is exec producer. Original Queen band members Brian May and Roger Taylor will serve as music producers.
Malek continues to work on Mr. Robot, which will enter its third season next year. He also stars in the mystery Buster’s Mal Heart which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival. He is currently filming Papillon with Charlie Hunnam.
Singer recently directed the summer blockbuster X-Men: Apocalypse. He will also serve as executive producer of the FX series Legion, which will premiere next year.
