Academy Award-winner Reese Witherspoon and The Mindy Project creator Mindy Kaling are circling A WRINKLE IN TIME, Disney’s adaptation of the classic children’s book from director Ava Duvernay. The actors would be joining previously cast Oprah Winfrey, who is the only star confirmed at this point. Amy Adams and Kevin Hart are also reportedly in talks to join the project. Frozen scribe Jennifer Lee is adapting the novel by Madeleine L’Engle.
The story of follows Meg Murry and her little brother, Charles Wallace, who have been without their scientist father, Mr. Murry, for five years, ever since he discovered a new planet and used the space travel concept known as a tesseract to travel there. Joined by Meg’s classmate Calvin O’Keefe, and guided by the three mysterious astral travelers known as Mrs. Whatsit, Mrs. Who and Mrs. Which, the children brave a dangerous journey to a planet that possesses all the evil in the universe in order to find Mr. Murry.
Witherspoon is eyeing the role of Mrs. Whatsit and Kaling is considering Mrs. Who. Winfrey is playing Mrs. Which.
Jim Whitaker is producing through his Whitaker Entertainment along with DuVernay through her Forward Movement. Adam Borba and Stephanie Varela will oversee for Whitaker. Sean Bailey, Tendo Nagenda and Jessica Virtue are the studio executives for Disney.
Witherspoon, who recently parted ways with her long-time producing partner Bruna Papandrea, has dozens of projects in the works, including Barbie and Ruth, the biopic about Barbie creator Ruth Handler, Opening Belle, an adaptation of Maureen Sherry’s novel, and Pale Blue Dot at Fox Searchlight. She will star in the HBO miniseries Big Little Lies opposite Nicole Kidman, which she also executive produced.
Kaling is the creator and star of the Hulu comedy series The Mindy Project which will see its fifth season premiere in October. She recently joined the highly-anticipated Ocean’s Eight opposite Sandra Bullock.
