RIVERDALE Season 2 will pick up in the immediate aftermath of the shooting in the Season 1 finale, judging by the first footage released at the show’s San Diego Comic Con Saturday.
Archie (KJ Apa) is seen dragging his gunshot-wounded father Fred (Luke Perry) to the hospital, while Betty (Lili Reinhart), Veronica (Camila Mendes) and Jughead (Cole Sprouse) gather around to support him.
Just like that, the Archie comic book adaptation has itself a brand new mystery, after the season-long arc of “Who killed Jason Blossom?” was finally solved last year.
At the panel, the show’s cast and producers also revealed classic comic book character Toni Topaz will come to Riverdale next season, and will be played by The Shannara Chronicles star Vanessa Morgan.
“In the Riverdale version of this character, she’s going to be a student at Southside High,” showrunner Roberto Sacasa-Aguirre told ET, who first broke the story. “She’s going to be a member of the Southside Serpents and she’s going to be a friend and confidant to Jughead Jones.”
Toni is bisexual in the comic books, and the showrunner also confirmed the show will explore that aspect of her character.
Additionally, Season 2 of Riverdale will be 22 episodes, up from 13 the first season.
Riverdale returns for Season 2 on Wednesday, October 11 at 8 p.m. ET on The CW.
