(Spoiler alert: Do not read on if you have not watched Wednesday night’s episode of Riverdale, “Silent Night, Deadly Night,” in which a major mystery of the season is solved. Seriously, don’t do this to yourself.)
Well, that was fast. Halfway into the season, RIVERDALE has apparently solved its big mystery: Who is the Black Hood?
After weeks of speculation and crazy theories, the serial killer and vigilante intent upon “cleansing” Riverdale of “sin” is… Joseph Conway.
That’s right, the janitor did it.
Joseph Conway, the sole surviving member of the Riverdale Reaper murders, was driven crazy after pointing to an innocent man as his family’s murderer, prompting a group of townspeople, including Betty’s grandfather and Cheryl’s grandmother, to kill him.
Conway, now the Riverdale High janitor going by the name Joseph Svenson, was ruled out as a suspect in last week’s episode by Archie, but it turns out, he was just mistaken.
The Black Hood lures Archie and Betty into a scary cat and mouse game – prompting them to kiss, which is a whole other can of worms – before burying poor Archie alive and ultimately being shot and unmasked by former Black Hood suspect Sheriff Keller.
So that’s the big mystery of the season solved, just nine episodes in. What will possibly happen now? I mean, besides the forever revolving door of romantic entanglements between Archie, Betty, Jughead and Veronica.
Well, perhaps the Black Hood saga isn’t quite over yet, at least for Betty. As the former resident Good Girl burns mementos she’s kept throughout the serial killer’s reign of terror, she hesitates and then decides to hold on to the mask itself.
Perhaps a signal that the return of Dark Betty is imminent?
Riverdale returns Wednesday, January 17 at 8 p.m. ET on The CW.
