NBC has given a put pilot order to , a mystery drama from Robert Zemeckis and Mysteries of Laura creator Jeff Rake.

In the mystery thriller, from Compari Entertainment in association with Warner Bros. Television, a plane disappears from radar and returns five years later after being untraceable and presumed lost at sea. No time has passed for those on the plane but, for their loved ones at home, a long five years have gone by. The series follows their personal lives as well as the larger mystery and purpose that is their destiny.

Rake is writing and executive producing, while Zemeckis and Jack Rapke will also serve as EPs. Jackie Levine will serve as co-EP.

The show comes three years after the disappearance of Malaysian Airlines Flight 370, which disappeared in March 2014 under mysterious circumstances, though there is no indication Manifest was inspired by the event in any way.

This marks the third time Zemeckis – who is a licensed pilot himself – has tackled the aftermath of plane crashes on screen, having previously directed Flight and Castaway. This season, he is also an EP on ABC’s potential live-action sitcom reboot of The Jetsons.

Manifest joins Greg Berlanti’s political drama Republic and Kevin Falls’ The Unrequited on NBC’s development slate for the 2018-19 season.
