Rooney Mara is in advanced discussions to star in David Fincher’s upcoming HBO series, UTOPIA. The drama, which was scripted by Fincher collaborator/Gone Girl author Gillian Flynn, follows a group of die-hard fans of a beloved, underground novel, who find themselves in their own thriller when they learn that the author has secretly written a sequel, dragging them all into a twisted game.
Fincher, who helmed episodes of Netflix’s House of Cards, will direct all episodes of the one-hour drama, which is based upon the hit UK series created by Dennis Kelly. Mara is approaching a deal to play the lead, Jessica Hyde.
Mara previously worked with the director on The Girl with Dragon Tattoo adaptation, which landed her an Oscar nom. Up next, she’ll appear as Tiger Lilly in Joe Right’s Peter Pan reinvention, Pan, which bows this fall. She’ll also appear opposite Cate Blanchett in the Weinstein Co.’s drama Carol, in Benedict Andrews’s drama Blackbird, and alongside Hugh Jackman in Alfonso Gomez-Rejon’s Collateral Beauty.
