The cast has been lined up for AMC’s remake of Roots, and it looks really good. Forest Whitaker, Anna Paquin, Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Anika Noni Rose, Derek Luke, Chad L. Coleman and Erica Tazel have all signed on for the epic reboot. English actor Malachi Kirby will play Kunta Kinte and Regé-Jean Page will play Chicken George after an international casting search was performed by producers Will Packer and LeVar Burton (who originally played Kunta Kinte in the 1977 ABC mini-series).
The four-night limited series will tell the story of a family of slaves and their fight to survive and keep the dignity and culture that was constantly being stolen from African slaves in the 18th and 19th centuries. Beginning with Kunta Kinte, who is captured and stolen from his home in Ghana and enslaved in Colonial America, his descendants live on to reclaim their freedom while witnessing seminal points in U history like the Revolutionary War, Civil War, and emancipation.
