UPDATE: The project has been shelved due to the fact that the filmmakers have yet to secure the rights to the novel.
James Franco is looking to cast Russell Crowe in his adaptation of Cormac McCarthy’s BLOOD MERIDIAN. The Academy Award-winning actor is in talks to star with Tye Sheridan and Vincent D’Onofrio.
Set during the 1850s and based on historical events that took place on the Texas-Mexico border, the story follows a 14 year old boy from Tennessee named the Kid who gets involved with Judge Holden and a ruthless gang of scalphunters.
In addition to directing and writing, Franco is also set to star. Vince Jolivette from Franco’s production shingle Rabbit Bandini is set to produce alongside Scott Rudin and Cassian Elwes. CAA is set to rep domestic rights while IM Global will handles international sales at Cannes.
Crowe is currently being courted to star in Universal’s reboot of The Mummy starring Tom Cruise. He can be seen next in the Shane Black-directed The Nice Guys opposite Ryan Gosling.
He is repped by WME.
