Russell Crowe is set to star as Captain James Riley in IM Global’s IN SAND AND BLOOD, which recounts the terrifying true story of a shipwrecked captain and his crew forced into slavery and tortured in the Western Sahara. It’s unknown if Crowe will also direct the drama, as the Oscar winner recently went behind the camera for his directorial debut The Water Diviner.
The film is based on the life of James Riley and his crew, who in 1815, became shipwrecked on a coast fringing the Western Sahara. Starving and dying of dehydration, the twelve-man crew was captured and enslaved by local tribesmen. The crew was split apart and sold to different traders, while an Arab trader named Sidi Hamet bought Riley and some of his men. Riley then risked his life to trick the trader into believing that he had a friend that would trade a great sum for himself and his men, located at a Moroccan port a thousand miles to north. The band then set off on a long and epic journey across one of the harshest environments on earth.
Crowe will next star opposite Ryan Gosling in Shane Black’s actionner The Nice Guys and alongside Aaron Paul and Amanda Seyfried in the drama Fathers and Daughters.
He’s repped by WME.
