Sam Riley is in final negotiations to play an antagonistic role against Scarlett Johansson in Dreamworks‘ upcoming GHOST IN THE SHELL.
The film, based on the popular Japanese manga series originally written and illustrated by Masamune Shirow, tells the story of the fictional counter-cyberterrorist organization Public Safety Section 9 in mid 21st Century Japan. One of the more popular adaptations of the manga is the 1995 film, which centers around Section 9’s investigation of the evil Puppet Master. While sources cannot confirm, it is speculated that Riley could be in talks to play the Puppet Master.
The film is being produced by Ari Arad, Avi Arad and Steven Paul. Snow White and The Huntsman’s Rupert Sanders is directing from the script by Jonathan Herman and Jamie Moss. Aside from Johansson, Ben-Hur actor Pilou Asbaek has also been cast.
Riley is perhaps best known as for his work in 2014’s Maleficent. He will next be seen in Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, due out next year.
Riley is repped by WME and Tavistock Wood Management.
