Upcoming Ocean’s Eight star Sandra Bullock is following in the footsteps of many other big name celebrities and heading to Netflix to star in their post-apocalyptic thriller BIRD BOX, the Tracking Board has confirmed. Susanne Bier is directing based on a script by Arrival‘s Eric Heisserer.
The project is based on the 2014 novel from Josh Malerman and takes place in the near future where the arrival of an alien race has driven the population to terrible violence. Bullock plays a mother to two children who have survived the ordeal and now must make a harrowing journey to continue their survival: 20 miles in a rowboat while blindfolded.
Bullock had been circling this project for over a year, while Scott Stuber, head of Netflix film, was extricating it from Universal, where he had previously been developing it. The project was also searching for a director at the time.
Dylan Clark, Chris Morgan, and Clayton Townsend are producing the film, set to begin production in August. The Hollywood Reporter first broke the news of the casting.
Bullock joins the likes of Brad Pitt in War Machine and Will Smith in Bright, both Netflix films.
She recently finished shooting the aforementioned Ocean’s Eight for Warner Bros. and her last film before that was 2015’s Our Brand Is Crisis with Billy Bob Thornton. She’s repped by CAA.
