Singer/songwriter and actor Sara Bareilles will be joining singer/songwriter and actor John Legend in NBC’s Easter Sunday musical special Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert.
Bareilles will play Mary Magdalene in the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical airing live on April 1, joining Legend and Alice Cooper as King Herod.
Directed by David Leveaux, the production will be staged in front of a live audience at the Marcy Armory in the Williamsburg part of Brooklyn, New York.
Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert is produced by Universal Television, The Really Useful Group, Marc Platt Productions and Zadan/Meron Productions and exec. produced by Webber and Rice, along with Marc Platt, Craig Zadan, Neil Meron, John Legend, Mike Jackson, Ty Stiklorius and Alex Rudzinski.
Sara Bareilles has established herself in the world of music having been nominated for six Grammys and selling over a million albums, although she’s best known these days for writing the music and lyrics for the Broadway hit musical Waitress, for which she received both Tony and Grammy nominations for the original score and cast album.
Repped by Paradigm, Bareilles’ previous work as a stage actor includes playing the Waitress lead on Broadway and playing Ariel in a 2016 production of The Little Mermaid at the Hollywood Bowl.
The role of Mary Magdalene in Webber and Rice’s 1971 musical was originated by Yvonne Elliman with many other actors having played her in revivals with the most recent one happening on Broadway in 2016 to celebrate the show’s 45th anniversary.
While I’m not that familiar with Bareilles music and having not seen Waitress on Broadway (despite loving the original movie), it’s hard to gauge what she might bring to a musical that includes John Legend AND Alice Cooper, but it certainly sounds intriguing.
