Sony has released a red-band trailer for its Scarlett Johansson comedy ROUGH NIGHT, which looks like a more commercial, gender-swapped take on Peter Berg’s Very Bad Things, and I mean that in the best way possible.
Miami fills in for Las Vegas this time around, with ScarJo playing the bride-to-be and Jillian Bell as her maid of honor. The rest of the bridal party includes Kate McKinnon, Ilana Glazer, Zoe Kravitz and a stripper who winds up dead, setting off a chaotic chain of events.
Rough Night boasts a hilarious cast that appears to have good chemistry together and seems game for anything. We know McKinnon (SNL), Glazer (Broad City) and Bell (Workaholics) are funny and that Johansson can kill when given the opportunity, but this film should give Kravitz a chance to flex some new muscles.
Female comedies have thrived at the box office of late, from Bridesmaids to last summer’s surprise hit Bad Moms, which is getting a sequel this year. Universal is also prepping the release of Girls Trip, which is expected to be another success for director Malcolm Lee and producer Will Packer.
Sony will release Rough Night on June 16, when it should provide a welcome respite from the big-budget blockbuster it’s sandwiched between – The Mummy and Transformers: The Last Knight. Lucia Ainello directs from a script she co-wrote with her Broad City collaborator Paul W. Downs, who also plays a supporting role in the film.
