The podcast that swept the nation last year is coming to TV. Phil Lord and Chris Miller are teaming up with FOX 21 to produce a scripted version of the events surrounding the successful podcast, meaning (although details are slim right now) that this will focus on the reporters trying to make a successful podcast and NOT on the case of Adnan Syed. Sarah Koenig and her This American Life team will produce alongside Lord and Miller.
Once writers are in place, Lord and Miller will start pitching cable networks to find the right fit. This news comes at the same time as the announcement that Serial will be doing a second season, this time based on Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl, who disappeared from his base in Afghanistan and was captured by the Taliban, requiring a massive prisoner exchange between terrorist cells and the US government to get him back.
Excitement is high on both sides of the project, with the Serial team noting that, “Chris and Phil take an unexpected approach to telling stories and that is so appealing to us at Serial. They experiment. They don’t mimic formulas.” And the team at Fox gushing that, “From the very first week of Serial’s release last fall, everyone at Fox 21 TVS was obsessed with the podcast.”
