The long-gestating SHANGHAI DAWN, the third installment in MGM’s Shanghai Noon franchise, has taken a huge step forward by tapping Napoleon Dynamite helmer to direct.

Last year the Tracking Board broke the story about the development of Shanghai Dawn at MGM. In addition to Hess on board as director, the franchise’s original actors Jackie Chan and Owen Wilson are in talks to reprise their roles.

Released in 2000, the original was an East-meets-West buddy comedy about a Chinese man (Chan) who is forced to team up with an outlaw (Wilson) to save a Chinese princess. The movie was a hit and led to the 2003 follow-up Shanghai Knights. Spyglass Entertainment is set to produce with Millar and Gough serving as executive producers.

Plot details for Shanghai Dawn are being kept under wraps but the story is by Miles Millar and Alfred Gough, who wrote the previous films. Theodore Riley and Aaron Buchsbaum wrote the script.

In addition to the cult hit Napolean Dynamite, Hess also directed and wrote the comedy Don Verdean starring Sam Rockwell. His next film Masterminds is set to open in theaters later this month.
