NBC’s live production of THE WIZ has found its Dorothy in Shanice Williams. After an extensive casting call, the network decided on the 18-year-old, who will join David Alan Grier as the Cowardly Lion, Mary J. Blige as the Wicked Witch of the West, and Queen Latifah as the Wiz.
New Jersey native Williams has several theater credits under her belt, including roles in the West Side Story, You’re A Good Man, Charlie Brown, 42nd Street, Seussical, and Pippin. She also joins Stephanie Mills, who played Dorothy in the original Broadway production, as Auntie Em.
Craig Zadan and Neil Meron, the duo behind NBC’s previous live musicals, will executive produce. Cirque Du Soliel’s newly formed stage theatrical division will produce along with Universal Television.
The Wiz Live! will air on December 3rd on NBC.
