Sony chairman Tom Rothman explained the title, saying, “Peter (Parker) is trying to find his way home.” The film’s star, Holland, was seen earlier in the evening on the red carpet for the premiere of Captain America: Civil War, the first film depicting the latest incarnation of the hero as it ushers him into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Sony flew Holland to Vegas for the presentation, which also showed off the franchise’s new logo.
Sony’s presentation also included a clip from Civil War in which Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) arrives at the Parker home to tell Peter he has been accepted for a special grant.
Spider-Man: Homecoming will be directed by Jon Watts with a script from John Francis Daley and Jonathan M. Goldstein. Holland stars alongside Marisa Tomei as Aunt May and Zendaya as Michelle. It is set to premiere July 7, 2017.
