The cast for James Gray and Brad Pitt’s outer space epic  has been coming together over the past couple weeks with respected actors Donald Sutherland and Ruth Negga joining Pitt and Tommy Lee Jones.

Now, a less likely actor has been attached to the film, as early ’00s comedy star, , best known for roles in Wes Craven’s Scream sequels,  2003’s Malibur’s Most Wanted and 2005’s Son of the Mask, joins the cast, the Tracking Board can confirm.

Kennedy will play Sergeant Peter Bello, a soldier posted on a Mars base, in the sci-fi thriller that sends Brad Pitt’s character across the stars in search of his missing father.

Gray directs from a script co-written by Ethan Gross, and it will be the next project co-produced by New Regency and Pitt’s Plan B that 20th Century Fox will distribute everywhere but China.  Co-financer Bona Group will handle distribution in that region.

The film will be produced by Gray with Pitt, Dede Gardner and Jeremy Kleiner for Plan B, RT Features’ Rodrigo Teixeira and Keep Your Head Productions’ Anthony Katagas. Marc Butan from Mad river and RT Features’ Lourenco Sant’Anna and Sophie Mas are executive producing, alongside Yu Dong, Jeffrey Chan, Anthony Mosawi and Paul Conway.

Kennedy has been keeping busy since 2007’s Kickin’ It Old School, his last high profile headlining comedy, but most of his work has been on television, providing his voice for animated shows, and making smaller movies. Joining Ad Astra should raise Kennedy’s profile, along with his appearances in Riley’s Peak with Jon Voight and Simon Kaijser’s Spinning Man  with Guy Pearce, Pierce Brosnan and Minnie Driver,

Kennedy is represented by ATA , and The Hollywood Reporter broke the news of his casting.
