After years of development, the film adaptation of Stephen King’s novel is finally moving forward with Nikolaj Arcel set to direct and oversee a rewrite of the project. The project has moved from Universal to Warner Bros. in the past couple years. Many directors were involved with the film at different points, with Ron Howard being attached to direct some time. He is still producing under his Imagine Entertainment banner. MRC is currently developing a companion television series, which has stayed in development over the course of the project switching studios. The most current draft of the screenplay was written by Akiva Goldsman and Jeff Pinkner.

The western sci-fi adventure series started with the novel The Gunslinger, and centers upon Roland Deschain, the last gunslinger who has been chasing after his adversary, “the man in black”, through a vast desert and beyond for many years. The studio will be casting the lead actor shortly.

Known for adapting the 2009 Swedish version of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, Arcel has written and directed the film A Royal Affair, starring Ex Machina actress Alicia Vikander and Mads Mikkelsen, star of NBC’s Hannibal. He has written the upcoming crime drama A Conspiracy Of Faith.
