Steve Carell Takes a Dramatic Turn in “Freeheld”

is set to replace Zach Galifianakis in . Based on the documentary of the same name, the drama tells the true story of New Jersey car mechanic Stacie Andree, and her police detective girlfriend Laurel Hester, who both battled to secure Hester’s pension benefits after she was diagnosed with a terminal illness. Ellen Page and Julianne Moore star as the couple, while Carell will play Steven Goldstein, an advocate for Garden State Equality. Peter Sollett is directing from a script penned by Ron Nyswaner.

While Carell isn’t necessarily known for his dramatic roles, he has proven through films like “Little Miss Sunshine,” “Dan in Real Life,” and “The Way Way Back” that he can hold his own in both drama and comedy. Case in point, his upcoming drama “Foxcatcher” has garnered a lot of early attention for his portrayal of John du Pont, a wrestling sponsor to Olympian Mark Schultz (played by Channing Tatum). His upcoming , though, skew a little younger, with family comedies “Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good Very Bad Day” and the “Despicable Me” spin-off “The Minions.”
