“Stronger” Trailer Gives an Emotional Look at Jake Gyllenhaal in Boston Marathon Bombing Drama (Video)

It has been four years since the infamous Boston Marathon bombing, but the devastation of the event is still fresh in our heads — and the new trailer for STRONGER paints a picture of the day through the inspiring true story of survivor Jeff Bauman, who became the living embodiment of “Boston Strong”.

Last year, Peter Berg’s Patriots Day gave us a more procedural look of the bombing and presented the bombing as a terrorist thriller. Based on the trailer of Stronger, the David Gordon Green-directed film takes a more emotional angle, focusing on one singular character. Bauman (Jake Gyllenhaal) is a 27-year-old, working-class Bostonian who tries to win his girlfriend Erin (Tatiana Maslany) back by meeting her at the finish line at the Boston Marathon. While waiting there, the explosion happens and he ends up losing both his legs. Upon regaining consciousness, he is able to identify one of the bombers but then goes on an emotional journey of rehabilitation as he copes with the loss of his legs as well as his relationship with his family, Erin, and himself.

The film is stacked with talent including Academy Award nominated actress Miranda Richardson. And to see Orphan Black‘s Maslany on the big screen is refreshing as it is exciting. The film is slated for a September 22 release date and is set up to be an awards season contender — and based on the “acting with a capital-A” provided by Mr. Gyllenhaal, this may be finally his time to shine.
