After drawing plenty of heat over the week and landing in multiple major territories, including MGM, New Line, Sony, Lionsgate, and 20th Century Fox, it appears that STX Entertainment has won the bidding battle for RED WIDOW from screenwriter Matthew Altman.
Described along the lines of John Wick, Bourne, and Salt, the story is a female-driven action thriller that follows superspy Sara Drake, who traded in her legendary career for a normal life eight years earlier and went completely off the grid. Forced back into action after a rogue special ops team murders her husband, Drake embarks on a bloody quest for vengeance that leads to the highest rungs of government, uncovering a secret that could shake the foundations of American democracy.
Matt Berenson and Jim Wedaa – who previously teamed to produce the STX thriller The Boy – are attached to produce. In addition to the aforementioned territories, the spec also went into Relativity, Studio 8, Millennium Films, and Screen Gems.
Altman is the scribe behind The Feud, Steven C. Miller attached to direct, Sam & Liz: A Killer Love Story, an action sci-fi spec that was acquired up by Relativity back in early 2015, and Feed The Devil, an adventure horror that Altman co-wrote with Max Perrier.
