SUITS Review: “Borrowed Time”

If the time was running out in the last episode of the time has officially run out in this week’s episode, “Borrowed Time”. Harvey calls for a 3 day delay in Sutter’s case, Jessica and Rachel have 5 more days in Bailey’s case, and Gallo gives Mike till just 6pm to get him parole before he tells Kevin about Mike’s plan to inform on him. Oh and Louis, he’s just trying to figure out if he wants to be Tara’s second string boyfriend or not.

First, we have Harvey making Cahill look like a fool in court when when he drops the Phillip Allen witness bomb in court, and Harvey gets the judge to delay the trial for 3 days for Cahill not giving proper notification during discovery. Buying time is something Harvey has always been good at. The 3 days are just enough time to depo the ‘surprise’ witness, Phillip Allen. Harvey makes Cahill look like an amateur again when he finds out that all Philip Allen has proof of is that he gave insider trading information to Sutter’s daughter, Jill and not Sutter himself. Which is another reason I don’t trust people with two first names (Phillip Allen). Anyway, this leads the road back to Jill who has been covering for her father and even let her husband, Kevin, go to jail for him. So the question is, can Harvey get Jill to turn on Sutter?

If Harvey can’t get Jill to turn on Sutter, maybe Mike can. He’s already revealed to Kevin that he knows about Jill’s involvement in Sutter’s insider trading and has asked Kevin to try to cut a deal. But Kevin is stubborn and insists that he’s not putting Jill in jeopardy or his kids. Mike calls Harvey to see about the status of Gallo’s case and Donna tells him his deal has been pulled. This prompts Mike to just come clean with Kevin about the deal he had with Cahill to inform on him because now, Jill making a deal with Cahill is Mike’s only chance of getting out. Kevin doesn’t take the news well and gives Mike a bloody nose and scores some time in solitary. Mike gets Kevin out after using his leverage with Gallo. And now that Kevin knows it’s Jill’s head that’s on the chopping block he agrees to Mikes plan. And Mike’s plan is a good one, he gets Donna to get Jill to visit Kevin and he gets Harvey to record Sutter throwing Jill under the bus and admit that he doesn’t care that she will go to jail for his crimes. Jill makes a deal and Sutter has no choice but to take his deal which is the jail time he deserves!

Meanwhile, Jessica and Rachel are trying to buy time in Leonard Bailey’s case after they find out that his only known alibi is deceased. They have another option, if Bailey has a relative who is sick they can use their illness to delay the execution date. Only problem is, is that Bailey’s sick surviving relative, his aunt Harriet, who wants nothing to do with him because she believes he’s guilty. Rachel and Jessica promise to get her to sign the papers to get Bailey more time. But when Rachel goes to convince Aunt Harriet she is still adamant about not wanting to be at her nephew’s execution. Rachel still gets her to sign the papers to delay the execution date though. When Jessica and Rachel return with the what they think is good news Bailey isn’t as excited as they hoped. In fact, he accuses Jessica of not caring about him at all. We’ve seen Jessica being accused of some crazy stuff by lawyers but it seems to affect her more when her character is being questioned by her own client. So just like fate she runs into her ex, Jeff, who reminds her that her ability to push emotion to the side is exactly what he loves about her.

Finally, we have Louis and his dating dilemma. After his amazing first date with Tara he’s conflicted about continuing to date her after she told him she’s in an open long-distance relationship. Donna encourages Louis to fight for her. But Louis almost looses it when Tara shows up 13 minutes late for dinner. He sounds like he’s about to end things with Tara when Tara tells him to “take her home”.  It looks like Tara and Louis might work out after all until Tara gets a call from her LA boyfriend and he tells her he’s coming to town.

This episode seemed to have a happy fairy tale ending with Mike is coming home and Rachel may have found a way to open back up Bailey’s case. I honestly didn’t think Mike would get out of prison this soon. I was waiting for something to happen at the end that would throw a wrench in everyone’s deals. But when Harvey and Mike work together, everyone wins, well almost everyone, Sutter is going to have to do some time. I’m sure his time away will give him lots of time to plot his revenge on Harvey and Mike.  Speaking of Mike, do we really have to hear that he’s calling collect from prison every time he calls? It’s as if he’s being announced into the scene. They might as well have a narration that says “Enter Mike”.

I love Rachel and Jessica teaming up. They’re good at playing good cop (Rachel) and more-experienced-and-less-emotional-cop (Jessica). They can learn a lot from each other, Rachel can learn to have the confidence Jessica has and Jessica can learn to have a little more emotion like Rachel. We rarely see Jessica’s softer side but Jeff is one of the few people that can bring it out of her. Now that her and Jeff have reconnected I have a feeling he won’t be taking that job in Chicago.

Louis has seemed to take a backseat to all of the firm drama and has been focused on Tara. I really thought Tara was going to tell Louis at the restaurant that she was late because she broke up with her boyfriend. And I was surprised when she told Louis to take her home instead. It was as if she was trying to avoid him breaking it off with her by distracting him with sex. So far I’m not a huge fan of Tara because she seems to be using Louis, she’s out of his league and he knows it but he’s sweet and treats her right. I hope she makes the right decision and chooses Louis. Although I am curious to see what this LA boyfriend is like. I’m sure Louis is too.

I’m looking forward to seeing what the hell Mike is going to do as a free man, what evidence Rachel found in Bailey’s case, if Jessica and Jeff are going rekindle their relationship, and if Tara is going to dump her boyfriend for Louis.
