We’ve reached the final episode of Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell, and though I’m sad for it to be over, I’m happy they did the book justice. Everything comes together in the end to bring the two magicians back together, united to use English Magic to defeat the Gentleman who created so much havoc in their lives.

Jonathan goes mad, and challenges the Gentleman directly in this week’s episode of Jonathan Strange And Mr. Norrell.
When we last left Jonathan Strange And Mr Norrell, they had split ways and Norrell had sworn to do everything in his power to destroy Jonathan and protect English Magic. Strange on the other hand had decided to retire to the country with his wife and give up doing magic, but Napoleon and the army intervened.
We find ourselves in the aftermath of Lady Pole’s assassination attempt in this week’s Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell. As things come to a head, the rift between Strange and Norrell grows farther and farther apart.
Last week a rivalry was born between Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell, and this week it takes a turn for the paranoid as Jonathan is in Portugal helping the English Army, and Mr. Norrell is at home trying to consolidate his power over English Magic.
We saw Norrell come to prominence as the first English magician in over 300 years and somewhere in England Jonathan Strange performed magic for the first time. This episode deals with the rivalry born once the two magicians take their place as the only practical magicians in England.
If you haven’t read the book, I don’t think it detracts in any way from the pilot episode. Like many pilots, this one takes a little while to get going, but it certainly is worth the patience.
