After intense bidding and negotiation, Netflix has landed a movie that originally started as a viral internet meme and sensation. The film will co-star Lupita Nyong’o and Rihanna, with Ava DuVernay directing and Insecure‘s Issa Rae in talks to pen the script.
The 54th New York Film Festival is set to open with the hot button topic of mass incarceration via Ava Duvernay’s documentary The 13th. The fest will serve as a stage for the world premiere of the film, which will later debut on Netflix and in limited theaters on Oct. 7.
