Johnson’s Hobbs and Statham’s Deckard Shaw are branching off from the blockbuster Universal franchise for a buddy action-comedy set in the same universe. Leitch’s Deadpool 2 opens next month.

The third collaboration between Johnson with Rawson Marshall Thurber (Central Intelligence, Skyscraper) is an action-comedy with no details on the plot, although it must be good since it began a bidding war between multiple studios.
Written by Ken Kaufman (Space Cowboys), the original sci-fi project takes place in a future where humans and robots fight side-by-side in battle. Zemeckis is attached to product but not direct (as of yet).
Jason Reynolds’ finalist for the National Book Award had a small bidding war for the movie rights, which Universal won, getting De Luca and Legend as part of the package.
Having already directed “Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip” and Disney’s “Old Dogs” may have made him the ideal candidate for Norman Bridwell’s beloved canine.
Based on the famous Disneyland ride of the same name, the film will be a period adventure, placing Johnson and others on a trip through Africa. John Requa and Glenn Ficarra are scripting the project, which been in development since the early 2000’s.
