Amandla Stenberg has scored the lead in the film adaptation of The Hate U Give, the debut novel from Angela Thomas. The YA novel is inspired by the Black Lives Movement and will be directed by George Tillman Jr.

The story follows Starr, a 16-year old girl who grows up in the slums but now attends an upper class prep school in the suburbs. When she witnesses a police officer shoot an unarmed friend, her world is turned upside down.

The original classic centered on a close-knit African American family who celebrated a tradition of coming together for a big dinner every Sunday, but finds that their family structure begins to fall apart after the death of their mother.

The lives of a young couple intertwine with a much older man as he reflects back on a lost love while he’s trapped in an automobile crash.
