The official teaser trailer for THOR: RAGNAROK has arrived and it does not disappoint! After two films (one pretty good, one made for bad-movie-night-drinking-games), What We Do in the Shadows director Taika Waititi has stepped in to helm the latest solo Thor film and is taking it in a whole new direction. Everything we’ve heard about this film so far is present in the teaser: Cate Blanchett as Hela, Tessa Thompson as Valkyrie, Jeff Goldblum as Grandmaster, and most exciting of all, Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner/Hulk. The Hulk’s arrival even causes Thor cry out “Yes!” at the same time as I and everyone else watching this trailer.
Prior to watching this, Thompson had me most excited for this film as the character of Valkyrie is a personal favorite, but now I’m just excited to see all the humor Waititi has placed in this epic film. Visually, it’s one part Star Wars, with its various worlds and species, and another part Lord of the Rings with sweeping shots and battle scenes. It’s the combination that the Thor films have needed visually but being primarily set on Earth limited and each featuring one main location.
If there’s one thing that the teaser didn’t need but could’ve used more of it’s Loki. How is he not still ruling Asgard? If Hela is greater than he, why didn’t she kill him off, or are they working together? How did he team up with the Grandmaster? Sure, it’s a teaser, they didn’t NEED to give us all, if any, of the answers to these questions, but as the breakout stars of this portion of the Marvel Universe he was surprisingly peripheral here.
So now just a quick… seven months until Thor: Ragnarok releases.
