EXCLUSIVE 〉Berg’s acquired the rights to the yet-to-be published novel.
Peter Berg’s shingle Film 44 has picked up the rights to the yet-to-be published novel, DESIGNING ADAM. Previously known as The Future Has Other Plans, the manuscript went out to a handful of major directors and producers last November, before Berg and Film 44 acquired the rights.
There’s no word yet on whether Berg will direct, or will merely produce the YA sci-fi/drama.
The novel was written by married writers Alex Mcaulay and Lisa M. Stasse. Pitched as The Fault In Our Stars meets Robopocalypse and set in 2056, the story follows the socially awkward teenage daughter of the famed engineer of the “robotic humanoid companion”, who attempts to pass it off as her human boyfriend after the start of a robot rebellion following a presidential assassination.
Film 44 is known for producing Hercules, Lone Survivor, Battleship, and the series Friday Night Lights.
Berg most recently directed Lone Survivor, which he also wrote. He’s next set to direct The Hunt for El Chapo, Deepwater Horizon, Jack And The Beanstalk, and The Six Million Dollar Man.
No stranger to adaptations, Mcaulay will adapt his novel Bad Girls for Inferno Entertainment and will also adapt the drama Cult for Grey Eagle Films. His spec, Flower, is being developed at Rough House Pictures. He also wrote the novels Lost Summer, Shelter Me and Oblivion Road.
Stasse, meanwhile, has written the first two installments of her Forsaken trilogy: The Forsaken and The Uprising.
The pair are repped by Circle of Confusion, WME, and Foundry Literature and Media. Berg is also repped by WME.
