Fox Animation has just picked up the rights to the novel THE CREATURE DEPARTMENT, about a corporation’s reliance on secret, fantastical creatures to invent all their amazing products. They’re adapting from a children’s novel by Robert Paul Weston, and aiming to deliver something in the vein of “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” meets “Monsters Inc.”
The story follows a twelve-year-old and his friend as they discover the corporations’s secret creatures, and join the creatures in their world of hidden invention. As the corporation continues its evil schemes, the creatures must decide if they will continue to work for them, and come under the brutal tutelage of a much-less-friendly monster who throws a wrench in their plans.
This will be a pretty sure hit for Fox, as they’re diving into safe, marketable territory. Though it’s a little too close to “Monsters Inc.” in my opinion, it will probably make a very cute story for the studio. Fox currently has “The Book of Life” and “Peanuts” in production, with “Ice Age 5” and “Anubis” (among others) in development.
Darlene Caamano-Loquet is overseeing at the studio.
