〉Dreamworks picked up the book in 2014 and entered talks with Amel
Rising screenwriter Arash Amel, who made waves after penning the Grace Kelly biopic Grace of Monaco, has been tapped to script DreamWorks’ crime thriller MADE IN SWEDEN. Amel was announced to be in talks last year, though sources close to the project have confirmed that he’s now set.
The heist drama is based upon the novel of the same name written by Anders Roslund and Stefan Thunberg, which in turn was based on real events. Mark Sourian of Mark Sourian Productions is producing, while Thunberg, Roslund, and Niclas Salomonsson will executive produce. Holly Bario and Mia Maniscalo are overseeing for the studio.
The Bonnie and Clyde-esque tale follows three brothers and their best friend, traveling under the moniker “The Military Gang,” who stole a number of weapons and attempted to sell them back to the Swedish government. After those plans failed, the gang launched a crime spree across Sweden, robbing banks and the like.
I’m told that the studio is looking at this one tonally to match that of The Town, with the crimes taking a backseat to the family drama at the forefront, focusing on the brother’s interpersonal relationships with each other and with their criminal father.
Aside from scripting the Nicole Kidman-led Monaco, Amel also penned the Aaron Eckhart thriller Erased for Radius-TWC. Since then, he’s scripted the War Games remake for MGM and the action/sci-fi Soldiers of The Sun for Universal, which has Vin Diesel attached to star. Amel also co-wrote the upcoming Seducing Ingrid Bergman adaptation, which James Mangold is directing and co-writing.
