The 2011 Hit List discovery Imitation Game was an exceptional coming-out project for new producers Ido Ostrowsky & Nora Grossman. The project, which the staff here at TB even predicted would land at the Weinsteins a solid 3-years before it eventually would, centered on the true tale of Alan Turning, a British mathematician who was a pioneer in the computer revolution, and the man who would crack Germany’s impossible “Enigma” code and change the tide for the Allies during World War II. But, in his personal life he was a tortured soul, forced into revealing his homosexual orientation to the very government he saved, and after enduring a humiliating treatment, he would go on to commit suicide. While our TB staff originally predicted Ben Whishaw in the lead role, in the years since that prediction another man leapt to the spotlight and landed the plum (sure to be Oscar-bait” role of Alan Turing. That man was none other than Benedict Cumberbatch. So, where do newcomer, and soon to be household name producers Istrowsky and Grossman go next?
Enter Mr. Albert Einstein.
Ostrowsky, Grossman and their company Ampersand Entertainment are set to produce the Einstein biopic currently entitled BECOMING EINSTEIN. The script, written by “Friday Night Lights” and “Parenthood” alum Monica Beletsky, centers on Einstein and Mileva Meric’s blossoming relationship in the late 1890s and the companionship and competitive nature that would spill across professionally and romantically throughout their tumultuous 16-year marriage. It is also widely speculated that Meric may have contributed a significant portion to Einstein’s ground-breaking Theory of Relativity.
For Ostrowsky and Grossman, the project is a thematically strong follow up to ‘Imitation’, following characters that would become larger than life in their own dynamic, yet muted lives. The strong emphasis on individual characters, and their struggle to balance expectation versus outcome is always welcome, and while we’ve not yet seen ‘Imitation’, if it’s even 80% as good as the script, I think it’ll be brilliant. Look for the duo to tackle ‘Einstein” with the same passion and dedication!
