Following the disappointment that was “The Lone Ranger,” we’re hearing word that Gore Verbinski is eyeing a turn to the YA genre for the upcoming Constantin Film project UNWIND. Based on the first book in the ‘Unwind Dystology’ trilogy, the story follows three teenagers as they seek to escape their families and their dystopian society, to seek a legendary “utopia” that can save them from the ‘unwinding’ process (a process parents can send their children through – not technically ending their lives, but instead transplanting all of their organs into various recipients). While the subject matter does seem a tad bleak, I recall many thinking the exact same when a certain “Hunger Games” project was announced.
The project was last updated when screenwriter Todd Stein was tapped to adapt the book back in May, 2013. Since then, we’ve heard a search for a director was on before any rewrites would be tackled. With Verbinski now circling, look for this project to get a second shot before it too unwinds.
