Javier Bardem is set to star in a supporting role in THE ALCHEMIST. Based on the novel by Paulo Coelho, the story follows an Audaiusian shepherd boy named Santiago who finds that his dreams of treasure and adventure become a reality when he is chosen to be mentored by a mysterious mage known only as the Alchemist. Bardem will star as the titular character, a shrouded horseman versed in magic that trains Santiago and leads him to Egypt. The project, though originally set up in 1997, has been moving forward with The Weinstein Company producing and Laurence Fishburne attached to direct and star. Several years ago, Fishburne was reported to be playing the title character, however he is now set to play Melchizedek, a middle-aged man who encourages Santiago to set out on his journey. John Fusco is writing the most current version of the screenplay.
Bardem made waves recently with his villainous turn in 2012’s Skyfall. Since then, the Academy award-winning actor has appeared in Ridley Scott’s The Counselor and voiced a pivotal character in the sci-fi thriller Autómata, starring Antonio Banderas. Next up, he’ll star in The Gunman with Sean Penn and the drama The Last Face, opposite Charlize Theron. Bardem is also highly rumored to appear in the upcoming Pirates of the Caribbean sequel, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales.
Bardem is repped by WME and José Marzilli.
