The Amazing Spider-Man 2 writer Jeff Pinkner has been brought on to rewrite Universal’s . is overseeing the project for Universal.

The remake, based on the ’s B-movie property originally created by Jack Arnold in 1954, centers on a group of scientists who embark upon a fossil-hunting expedition up the Amazon river. Things get messy when they encounter a pre-historic creature who is half-human and half-fish–but lo and behold, the monster happens to fall in love with one of the female scientists. That role is currently out to Avengers star Scarlett Johansson.

Given his credits, Pinkner seems well-suited to the task of resurrecting the sci-fi horror classic. Pinkner was a showrunner for ABC’s cult sci-fi series Fringe, and he’s currently adapting Stephen King’s The Dark Tower. He’s also one of a dozen writers involved in Paramount’s Transformers writers’ room experiment, having recently submitted a treatment for Transformers 5, and serves as a showrunner for CBS’ summer series Zoo.
