The film chronicles the true story of Louis Mulkey, a beloved fireman and high school basketball coach whose tragic mid-season death fighting a sofa shop fire rallied his team, The Green Wave, as they made an improbable run to the state championship. When the story of the Summerville High School Green Wave’s incredible season first broke in 2008 it made national headlines. Now, Cassavetes will keep Louis Mulkey’s legend alive on the silver screen.
Cassavetes, whose film career has taken him both in front of and behind the camera, is best known for directing the 2004 Nicholas Sparks-penned smash hit “The Notebook”, which skyrocketed the careers of its young stars, Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams. As an actor, his roles have included villain Dietrich Hassler in the John Woo action thriller “Face/Off” and most recently a spot in “The Hangover Part II”.
Michael Tollin, who was originally set to direct, will produce along with Ron Semiao, Katherine Brown and Kim Zubick.
Cassavetes is repped by ICM.
