The novel, written by Markus Zusak, takes place during World War II and centers on a young girl named Liesel with a love of reading who experiences the horrors of the Nazi regime as her foster parents harbor a Jewish refugee in their basement in Munich. Most notable of the original novel is the use of Death as the narrator. Michael Petroni is penning the script, which Brian Percival will direct. Although their characters can not be confirmed, Nélisse would be a sensible option for the lead of Liesel, with Liersch a strong candidate for Rudy, a childhood friend of Liesel’s who assists in her book-stealing ways.
Karen Rosenfelt and Ken Blancato will produce.
Nélisse had a breakout role as Alice L’Écuyer in Philippe Falardeau’s drama “Monsieur Lazhar”, for which she won a Genie Award.
