UTA’s Jason Richman has hit the market with surreal drama THE BEAUTIFUL BUREAUCRAT, penned by award-winning author Helen Phillips. Set for publication on August 11th, 2015 via Henry Holt and Co., the chilling novel centers on a young wife who takes on a new job at an enigmatic organization that pits her against the dark machinations of the universe.
After a long period of unemployment, Josephine feels blessed to finally land work, inputting an endless string of numbers into something known only as “The Database.” Working in a windowless building in the remote part of town, Josephine grows increasingly anxious and worried about her surroundings, her sinister boss, and her strange co-workers. After her husband disappears and then returns, offering no explanation as to his absence, her uneasiness crescendos into full-blown terror. In order to save those she loves, she must penetrate an bureaucracy whose influence seems to envelop every corner of the city and beyond.
The Beautiful Bureaucrat marks Phillips’ fourth release, following her 2011 debut And Yet They Were Happy. Since that time, the acclaimed author has written the short story collection Some Possible Solutions and the children’s adventure novel Here Where the Sunbeams Are Green. A graduate from both Yale and Brooklyn College, Phillips has been the recipient of a Rona Jaffe Foundation Writer’s Award, The Iowa Review Nonfiction Award, the DIAGRAM Innovative Fiction Award, the Italo Calvino Prize in Fabulist Fiction, and the Meridian Editors’ Prize.
