Wu-Tang Clan founder RZA will be continuing his career as a director following the recent Love Beats Rhythm with CUT THROAT CITY, a post-Katrina heist drama. He’s already lined-up quite a cast for it with Terrence Howard (Empire), Wesley Snipes (Blade), Baby Driver star Eiza González, Ant-Man’s Tip “T.I.” Harris, as well as Demetrius Shipp Jr. (who played Tupac Shakur in All Eyez on Me) and Dope/The Get Down star Shameik Moore all onboard.
Written by P.G. Cuscheri, the film centers around four boyhood friends who return to New Orleans’ Lower Ninth Ward after Hurricane Katrina to find their home decimated, so they turn to a local gangster for employment. He hires them to pull off an elaborate casino heist.
The movie has already started production in New Orleans, produced by Rumble Riot Pictures’ Elliott Michael Smith, Patriot Pictures’ Michael Mendelsohn, William Clevinger, Kyle Tekiela, Sean Lydiard, Film Wealth and RZA. the film is being financed by Mendelsohn’s company Union Patriot Capital Management with Jim Steele and Natalie Perrotta as exec. producers and Jarod Einsohn co-producing. XYZ Films will rep the film’s international sales.
The cast also includes Joel David Moore, Kat Graham, Rob Morgan (Mudbound), Keean Johnson, Denzel Whitaker and Isaiah Washington.
This project seems like a huge coup for the WME-repped RZA to pull together such an amazing cast for his third feature film as a director, and it’s interesting that he continues to work with rapper/actors like T.I. and even Shipp has a rap background, having played Tupac.
This project was initially reported on by Deadline.
