Director Alex Garland may have found the final piece for his next sci-fi project, ANNIHILATION, as he is eyeing Tessa Thompson to join the cast. She would appear opposite previously announced stars Natalie Portman and Gina Rodriguez.
The story follows a biologist seeking answers to her husband’s tragic disappearance. She journeys into an area sealed off by the government for the last 30 years as an environmental disaster zone with the help of a secret agency known as the Southern Reach that has sent many expeditions over the years to discover the truth about “Area X”. She and her team find a pristine wilderness, but they also notice quickly that the rules of nature and evolution seem to work a little differently.
The film is based on Jeff VanderMeer’s Annihilation, the first book in the Southern Reach Trilogy. The second and third books, Authority and Acceptance, were both published in 2014. The project is produced by Scott Rudin and is set up at Paramount.
Thompson was most recently seen in this year’s Creed opposite Michael B. Jordan and Sylvester Stallone. She previously starred in Dear White People and Selma.
