The Coen Brothers Pen Cold War Script for Spielberg and Hanks

Joel and are set to write a draft of the untitled Cold War thriller from Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks. The project is set up at DreamWorks and tells the true story of James Donovan, a prominent American attorney who was unexpectedly thrust into the center of the Cold War after being tasked by the CIA to slip past the Berlin Wall on his own and negotiate the release of the downed U-2 spy plane pilot Gary Powers. Matt Charman took the first swing at the . Hanks will star in the project and Spielberg has signed on to produce but we’re hearing that if his schedule can handle it, he may sign on to direct as well.

The dynamic duo is known for their offbeat features including “Fargo,” “The Big Lebowski,” “No Country For Old Men,” and “Inside Llewyn Davis.” They also penned and directed “The Ladykillers” a crime/comedy which also starred Tom Hanks. At this point it’s safe to say that they can pretty much do it all. Their next project is the Angelina Jolie helmed biopic “Unbroken” chronicling the life of Olympic runner Louis Zamperini who was taken prisoner by Japanese forces during WWII. They will also write and direct comedy “Hail Caesar” which follows a Hollywood fixer in the 1950s who works to keep the ’s stars in line.
