On Thursday, Academy president Cheryl Boone Isaacs joined John Krasinski, Guillermo Del Toro, and Ang Lee to announce the nominees for the 88th Annual Academy Awards.
The Revenant led the pack with 12 nominations, although Mad Max: Fury Road wasn’t far behind with 10 nominations. Sylvester Stallone’s nomination for Best Supporting Actor in Creed earned a burst of applause from the crowd, while many were surprised to hear Ridley Scott’s name omitted from the list of Best Director nominees. Star Wars: The Force Awakens nabbed 5 nods, including a remarkable 50th Oscar nomination for composer John Williams. All in all, the Academy selected 8 out of a possible 10 Best Picture nominees, with Carol–long considered a shoe-in for the category–failing to make the cut. See how the nominees stacked up to our predictions.
This year, Chris Rock is set to take the stage as host of the Oscars ceremony, which will air live Sunday, February 28th, at 7 EST / 4 PST on ABC from the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood.
