After the Golden Globes, where critics pointed out the nominees were in a politically charged mindset that didn’t align with host Jimmy Fallon’s more broad comedy approach, the Screen Actors Guild Awards more than made up for the disconnect. Last night, Ashton Kutcher opened the awards show commenting on this weekend’s events following an executive order from the White House. It was the start of many speeches during the ceremony, including ones from winners Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Stranger Things, and Taraji P. Henson on behalf of Hidden Figures, that emphasized a need for a united front in the country.
There were a few big surprises for the night, in particular Denzel Washington took home the statue for Fences over Casey Affleck. The Manchester by the Sea actor has been an awards season favorite heading into the Oscars. On the television side, the summer surprise hit of the year, Stranger Things, also came in with a big win over established series Downton Abbey and Game of Thrones.
